State and County Populations

University of Florida research demographers recently reported that Florida shed about 50,000 residents between April 2008 and April 2009. James Thorner of the St. Petersburg Times has pointed out that “it’s the first time since 1946 that Florida has been a net population loser.” These reports confirmed earlier Census projections.

There is a strong correlation between the Florida economy and population growth. The population decline together with the recession and collapse of the housing market has had a devastating impact on the state of Florida. The impacts have been felt in government, business and by individuals.

Are Floridians doomed to cyclical hell with housing crises and recessions or is sustainable growth possible?  Some predict Florida’s population dip will be short lived while others point out that high housing and property insurance costs, relative to the rest of the country, will have a lasting impact.  We side with those who predict that the population dip will be short lived.

The housing market in Florida has bottomed and the housing collapse has genuinely returned Florida back to the good old days when living in the sunshine was cheap. We have been writing about this for a year and expect that the population growth will resume as Boomers figure it out.

We now have a genuine catalyst for economic growth in Florida.  The Florida Legislature has approved a package of train legislation to launch Commuter rail, Sunrail, through Orlando and bail out South Florida's Tri-Rail system through Miami.  Governor Crist has signed this package into law. Florida is now waiting to learn about its High Speed Rail initiative from Tampa to Orlando based, in part, on federal stimulus funding.

Come on down!  Get started on your move before the thundering horde of Baby Boomers ramps back up.
